American President Donald Trump reportedly asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help the three American UCLA students, including LiAngelo Ball, who were arrested for shoplifting.
LiAngelo Ball, son of LaVar Ball and younger brother of LA Lakers’ Lonzo Ball, was among the three young basketball players charged. As we reported last week, the trio were arrested for allegedly stealing from a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou. ESPN have revealed Trump personally got involved and brought up the issue with Xi to help resolve the case.
The White House confirmed Trump’s contact with Xi in an email to the Washington Post where Xi reportedly promised Trump that the players would be treated fairly.
Ball and his teammates Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were released on bail and have been staying in a hotel while the rest of their UCLA team returned to the US on Saturday.
There’s no news yet on when Ball and co. will be able to return to the US and join the rest of their UCLA team but an anonymous US official told the Washington Post that their charges have been reduced and the case is headed towards a resolution.
